Typhoid is a bacterial infection often transmitted through contaminated food and water. Infection can cause intestinal bleeding, toxic heart disease, pneumonia, seizures, swelling of the brain and death.

Signs and symptoms include:

• Mild fever and chills
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Occasionally abdominal discomfort, constipation and/or diarrhoea

As well as vaccinations you can prevent contracting Typhoid by:

• Avoiding ice from unknown water sources
• Only drinking water that is treated or from a sealed bottle
• Avoiding uncooked food
• Only eating fruit which can be peeled
• Maintaining good personal hygiene

Vaccination is often required every 3 years.
